As a new parent you can sometimes feel like there are a million and one new things that you need to learn to care for your newborn. Swaddling techniques might well be on your list, but luckily with a little bit of practice your baby can enjoy the benefits of swaddling sooner rather than later!
Swaddling is the centuries-old art of wrapping a newborn baby snugly in a swaddle blanket. Swaddling technique is important to understand because of the many benefits it can provide to your baby and since it is a useful life skill to learn for any new parent. But first let’s recap the benefits of swaddling.
Benefits Of Swaddling
Swaddling undoubtedly has a naturally calming effect on infants, as the swaddle blanket makes them feel secure and actually mimics the coziness of their mother’s womb. When done right this can help a newborn settle down and improve the quality and quantity of their sleep.
Another benefit of swaddling is that the closeness of the fabric helps eliminate infant anxiety by imitating your touch. It can also prevent them from scratching their face during the night.

Swaddling Technique
Step 1: We recommend using a Kemina swaddle blanket which is both light and breathable. These muslin blankets are so soft to the touch that your baby will be happy and soothed every time you use it.
Step 2: Spread out your swaddle blanket on a soft, flat surface. Arrange the blanket in a diamond shape with the bottom of the diamond pointing towards you. Then fold down the top edge of the swaddle blanket to create a triangle.
Step 3: Next, place your baby in the center of the swaddle blanket with their shoulders just below the folded corner and his/her feet pointing towards you.
Step 4: Place your baby’s right arm alongside their body, just slightly bent. Pull that same side of the blanket up and over your baby’s right arm and body, then tuck it underneath your baby. Your baby’s left arm should be left free.
Step 5: Now fold the bottom corner of the swaddle blanket up and over your baby’s feet, tucking the fabric neatly into the top of the swaddle by their shoulder.
Step 6: Place your baby’s left arm alongside the body, slightly bent. Pull the swaddle blanket from that side, up and over the arm and across the body, and complete the swaddle by tucking underneath your baby.
If you want to check the fit of your swaddle then simply place two fingers between the swaddle blanket and your baby’s chest. If your fingers fit easily beneath the fabric then you have achieved the perfect level of snugness. Though we do recommend keeping it slightly looser around the hip area.
